The source images in the history series were recorded by my father while stationed in Germany in the late 1960's. They were shot using a super 8 movie camera and serve as a document of his life while in the Air Force during this time. I was born at Hahn Air Force Base in Germany in 1969. My father committed suicide in 1970. Twenty-one years later, I found a total of 16 three minute films in my mother’s basement which had never been projected. With these films, I tried to piece together my father's life while in Germany, but found that the history they created was scattered at best. In 1998, while looking at parts of the films through a loupe on a light table, I realized that I was more interested in some of the single images rather than the “moving pictures.” I edited them using a still camera to capture several of the passing frames as the films were projected. I found that in this process, I was creating blurs both in the history of the images and in the images themselves. history is a process of discovery as well as invention; time is compressed, expanded and made still.
